THE STORY

In the wake of her husband's death, Yasmin, a mualaf, struggles to manage the funeral with having to face Adnan, a difficult father-in-law. As they both find different ways to grief over the loss of a husband and a son, their actions resulted in them to neglect Emilya, her young daughter. In the end, Emilya becomes the string that ties both of them together & reminds them what’s most important in this time of grief: family.

'In Peace' is a short film that explores the themes of grief & conflict within an interracial family. The film will be made in Bahasa Malaysia and English.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

This film is about the loss of a loved one, which is something no one can escape from. It is very close to my heart because I’ve experienced a great loss within my family. My dad's passing was the main inspiration for this story. The protagonist, Yasmin, reflects my mother & her journey of going through the process.

Growing up, I have always been exposed to the interracial culture as my parents shared an interracial marriage. It has always struck me as an interesting experience; the beauty of seeing two worlds colliding to become one.

My team and I might not have shared the same experience, but one thing that we can all relate to is the harsh truth of losing something or someone you love. So this film is for the ones who have lost & feels lost in their lives.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

With all that, we need YOUR help to make this film a reality, and here is where all the money collected will go.

The funds we receive from this crowdfunding will help us in covering the costs of:

1. CAST- Funds will cover up the payment of the actors for 3 shooting days.

2. ART DEPARTMENT- This will cover the props for the film, in which we aim to look for traditional art design and items as our Production Designer has in mind. The budget will also go into building a set for a particular scene and to cover the cost of the makeup for the cast.

3. EQUIPMENT RENTAL- Most of the budget will go to renting Camera Accessories, Lighting, and Grip stuff. Our Cinematographer and Director have a clear vision of how the film should look and feel so we do need particular equipment to make this film successful.

4.  LOGISTICS - We have 2-3 shooting locations for 3 days shooting like a house, cemetery, and hospital. We do need to pay the fees and permits for the respective locations, foods, and beverages for the cast and crew on set as accommodations as well.

5. DISTRIBUTION & MARKETING - We are making this film with the aim that it would travel to national and international film festivals. The funds received will be used to enter these film festivals and for the film to be able to be screened.

As our film is inspired by a true event. It is much of a challenge for us to find the right cast for the specific characters in this short film who would be able to emote genuinely of their actions and feelings throughout the film.

Besides casting, our biggest challenge is soliciting funds for the whole production and post-production phase of our film. As we are still students who are pursuing our tertiary studies and not in the working field yet, we are facing difficulties in proceeding with our production work and are in dire need of financial assistance. These funds will be really helpful to us in many ways possible and will be used wisely for our cast and fellow crewmates in terms of F&B, accommodation, and many more.

At the end of the day, it is important to us as a team not to just produce and make a good film, but a purposeful film. This film enables us to bring the issues concerning not only grieve within a family, but also the interracial society in our country into the limelight and we hope our fellow audience gets to see that.
